The oyster truck from Live And Let Die
It turns out the oyster truck from the extended boat chase of Live And Let Die is still around -- but not in the best shape.
Peter Brooker's There Will Be Bond podcast (formerly From Tailors With Love) has a June 20 episode that includes an interview with Liz Williams of the National Food & Beverage Foundation.
The truck is at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans.
In the 1973 film, James Bond (Roger Moore) is cruising around the Louisiana bayous trying to get away from henchmen employed by Dr. Kananga/Mr. Big. This creates all sorts of havoc.
Lawmen, including Sheriff J.W. Pepper, are trying to catch up. The slow-moving oyster truck gets in the way of the law-enforcement officers, causing much frustration for Pepper. Eventually, they get around the truck. Except they all soon get into a big accident. The oyster truck catches up to them. The elderly driver honks at the lawmen.
According to the There Will Be Bond podcast, the truck has seen better days. In 2005, during Hurricane Katrina, when much of New Orleans was underwater, so was the truck. Since then, the truck has been outside and exposed to the elements.
Liz Williams says on the podcast, "We simply got a call out of the blue from the owners of the truck... The people who owned the truck never didn't ever have it fixed. It started to rust and rust and rust." The owners approached the museum, not because it was a James Bond vehicle but was tied up with New Orleans history.
The podcast says there are efforts afoot to try and get the vehicle restored. It remains to be seen how this will turn out.
