Our new chicks are doing well. We spent the day working on the garden beds and cleaning the animal stalls. We enjoyed a nice swim after dinner. the pool was one of the best investments. This evening, we had a scary incident after the summer dishes were put away. There was a bear in our backyard. We have had coyotes and mountain lions, but never a bear. Oh, yes, we also have scorpions and snakes on the property. I started screaming when I saw this young bear and his mom. My husband thought it was a snake because I have a snake phobia. I was feeding the adult chicken a big tray of scrapes. The bears looked at me. I stood very still. I put the tray on top of the hen house gate. I slowly walked to my husband's heavy-duty truck and laid on the horn. The bears lumbered to the next door, and I sent a mass text to all the neighbors on our cul-de-sac. In Colorado, you can shoot or trap bears if they are a danger to the public. I walked into the house and said you won't believe what was in the dooryard. Luckily no one was harmed. The sheriff was notified. Rural living is never dull. Some predators show up, some crops flourish beyond comprehension while others fail, and kitchen experiments may develop organisms that they shouldn't or you wish they wouldn't. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
