For months I've considered what I needed to carry on my upcoming Camino journey. Beyond the necessities of clothing, medications, maps, and travel documents, I've felt a need for symbols that will anchor me in my purpose. The central symbol for the Camino is the scallop shell.
I found a scallop charm that is specifically geared for the Camino with St. James in relief of the inside.
Thinking about my 16 days on the path and total of three weeks away, I've thought of those I care about, those I love who I'll care with me. I needed something to symbolize these who I'll leave behind, and with that came the second charm. I'll carry them in my heart.
I remembered back to when I was in middle school and saw my cousins go off to serve in the Vietnam War in various branches of the military. I remembered guys wearing St. Christophers on pendants along with their dog tags. Later, I looked up St. Christopher and understood why he was a symbol to go with the soldiers: he's the patron saint of safe travel.
see Story of crossing the river. I'll cross over five rivers on the Coastal Camino, and while I don't expect to have to navigate rough waters, I do long for safety throughout my journey.
I took my three charms to my friend and owner of the Firefly store, Melanie http://www.FireflyCarrboro.com and told her about my trip. Together we chose a chain that was durable for wearing and had an older look to speak to the ancient pilgrim's path. I was so pleased with how they came together and have started wearing them on training days, reminding myself of what each charm symbolizes.
You'll see me wearing this in my pictures from the Camino.
Are there symbols that represent important things in your life right now?
