Last week, I wrote to you about starting my Double Wedding Ring adventure. This week, I've done all the quilt math to see what was needed and started tracing and cutting templates. I thought I might share a few thoughts on the process!
First, the name of the book is Scrap Quilts Galore by Quilts Made Easy. It's an older book, but still available on used books sites and Amazon. Funny story, though. I owned this book in the 90's, which is when it was printed. In a round of decluttering, I got rid of it, thinking I wouldn't need it again. Needless to say, I bought it a second time online. I love the scrap quilts in this book! I won't be too quick to declutter this quilt book again!
The pattern in the book calls for 194 of the end pieces, or end caps as I'm calling them. We've chosen to make the original size, so my math is easy. I'll be making 21 football shapes to start, so these end caps are first. I got a good start over the weekend on the end cap fabric pieces.
The process is simple but time consuming. I trace the template onto the front of the fabric with a micron pen. I use serrated scissors to cut the fabric piece out, and repeat. This is the tedious part of the process, though. Once my pieces are cut, I can sew by machine and have those footballs made in no time flat!
My daughter and son in law have chosen a great variety of colors and prints, so this will be a beautiful quilt. I'm excited to be working with these fabrics, too. Let's see if that excitement can carry me through trace, cut, repeat 194 times on this template alone. (It's more for the other two ring templates!)
One of the really good points about this part of the process is that it's totally portable. In fact, it will be one of the easier things I've done lately that I take with me to guild sew days! All I need is a stack of fabrics, the templates, my pen and scissors, and a labeled zip top bag or two!
In the meantime, I'm going to be working to put a few other projects into the finished basket. I have a pattern to write, a skirt to make, and a few patriotic quilt blocks to finish for a gift quilt. I get to pass the blocks on to another quilter in my guild, so that one's almost finished! I'll be working on those things over the week and making small double wedding ring pieces in the evenings, as it's very mindless work!
I hope you're enjoying the process with this quilt. It's certainly going to take me a minute to get templates cut, but I think the quilt itself will go together quickly! Happy Monday!
Stacy
