Good Monday morning to you! It's been a hot week here, so I've been inside working on calm sewing! In addition to reducing the heat and energy I use, quiet work just makes me feel cooler! Today's topic is a fun one, a tip for fabric selection!
I peruse certain sites to see if there are fabric sales that I need to purchase from. I also keep a sharp eye on a few Etsy shops that make custom bundles. Last week I came across a beachy star-spangled bundle and loved it. I was almost to the buy point, but I got to thinking about fabric already in my stash.
I pulled out a few blues, matching them (sorta) to the beachy bundle online. Once the blues were chosen, I worked on matching the reds to the blues! I found this whole bundle in my stash, most of which were left over from other projects. Some pieces are even smaller than a fat quarter. I'm pleased as punch with my beachy patriotic fabric pull!
This method does two things. It uses my stash, and it keeps me from buying fabric I may not need. I happen to have quite the stash of patriotic fabrics, so it's good that I'm gathering fabrics from what I already have. It's a pretty frugal concept, using what I already own to fill a gap.
I've used this idea to make other types of bundles, too, like my Farmer's Wife 1930's bundle. In that one, I found that I could match the color of the fabric and get a very similar feel to the 50 fat quarter bundle being sold for the project. The pieces were so tiny on the blocks for that quilt, so I didn't need much of each print, but a wide variety. Wow was I glad to have a stash!
I encourage you to try using what's already in your stash. If you're stuck for inspiration, just go to any online retailer and search "fat quarter bundles". If it has three aqua, replace with aqua that's already in your stash. One of the tricks a designer uses is to choose different types of prints, like geometric and floral, to make up the bundle. You can also search "custom fabric bundle" on Etsy and find some of the prettiest, most unique bundles of fabric for sale. They should give you good inspiration for bundling your own stash into usable stacks!
I pray this finds you well this Monday morning! And I pray that it's not too hot where you are today. May you find peace and comfort, but also cool places to rest.
Stacy
