U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz is planning a rally and prayer vigil in support of former President Donald Trump after an attempt to assassinate him this weekend.
The firebrand Republican from Florida's Panhandle is staging a "Never Surrender Rally" in Pensacola Monday at 5 p.m. Central Time. Gaetz plans the rally to take place at the Marcus Pointe Baptist Church, 6205 North West Street in Pensacola.
Gaetz's office announced the rally Sunday and said the event will last about an hour and a half.
"Join Congressman Matt Gaetz to show your support and pray for President Donald J. Trump following the Saturday assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania," a Gaetz announcement said.
Trump was grazed in the right ear by a gun shot as he was speaking at an open-air campaign rally Saturday about 6:15 p.m. in the city just north of Pittsburgh. U.S. Secret Service agents rushed Trump from the stage as blood trickled down his face and the former President raised his fist to show he was not seriously hurt.
One spectator at the rally in Butler was killed by a bullet fired by the gunman while two other bystanders were severely injured.
Secret Service agents shot and killed the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was perched on top of a building about 150 yards from the rally stage. Law enforcement officials found explosive devices in the car owned by Crooks at the scene of the Pennsylvania rally and more bomb-making materials were found at his home in a town not far from Butler.
