Many of my choices for the home are very much like selecting our food. Is it good for our health, is it good for our budget, and is it creating more waste? Our daughter was going through a ton of scrunchies and plastic hair clips. A pack of scrunchies at Walmart was 8 dollars for 5. These add up quick. I sewed 30 of them for less than 1.25. I bought her 2 wooden hairpins, and metal hair accessories. She values these items and takes care of them. This was not the case with Walmart things. The half-moon hairpin is a favorite.
I tend to bulk shop rather than purchase things in plastic. We grow and can our produce and buy from farmer's market.
Shop for big ticket items on Prime Day & Black Friday, etc. I have a special savings account for this purpose.
Budget will only go so far in times of inflation. This year, we tapped out our pet care account and home repair accounts. This has never happened. I always had 20% more to these accounts every year. I never thought that a 6 year old puppy could get so sick. We found put that our girl had a genetic disease that was missed through out her life. I called her breeder to let him know.
Canning, freezing, and drying your produce will stock you up for the winter prices are high.
Make, reuse, and do with out. There are so many things you can use instead of purchasing them. Hair pins can be made from unused chopsticks. Food grade Vinegar can be used in salad dressing, cleaning products, and science projects. Coconut oil can be used in baking, for your skin and hair.
