No actual James Bond film news? Don't worry. The Guardian is at it again.
The U.K. outlet, for the umpteenth time, had a July 5 article, calling for a new take. Here was the subhead on The Guardian's newest story:
Whoever plays the role, it would be wise if the franchise rebooted in period costume – so that 007's sexism and toxic masculinity seem less anachronistic
The Guardian has been doing this for years. This newest effort cites odds from British bookies (WHO HAVE NO INSIDE INFORMATION, THEY ALTER ODDS TO GENERATE BETS).
The Guardian also delivers typical snark: "The most recent 007, played by Daniel Craig, always felt like he was one small slip away from falling down a rightwing rabbit hole. He was arrogant, self-righteous and self-pitying, and if it weren't for the excellent writing and Craig's wonderfully nuanced performance, he might have represented the epitome of early 21st-century toxic masculinity."
Whatever. No actual new information? Of course not. But more snark follows.
"The only way to bring Bond back for the umpteenth time while retaining any of the original 007's essential fundamental nature would be to take Her Majesty's favourite secret agent back to a time when he was not such an anachronism and an embarrassment – to when, for better or worse, he made sense."
That's enough. As the blog observed a few days ago, the Bond film universe abhors a vacuum.
The Guardian, a more respectable British outlet compared with The Sun and The Mail Mail, still engages in the race for clicks.
Until Eon Productions says it will either go ahead with Bond 26 or wave the white flag, we'll see this sort of thing, possibly for years.
