How quickly summer has flown by, and we've barely seen The Lake. We stopped Sunday evening to watch the waves. These harebell flowers are clinging to the rocks, their roots in a crevice, happily dancing in the breeze with the lake. Please don't notice that Elv is looking at his phone. "Biden has dropped out." He said, but I am too absorbed in the waves to care. White caps and sea gulls added interest to the waves. It's better to find yourself a comfortably shaped rock and nestle in for a good long look at the movement and color of the lake. The more you look the more you'll see; besides the swish and splash of the waves at your feet will clear your head. Clear your head of the news noise. And thank God, He still thinks beautiful lakeshores are important for us. Our hugelculture garden is still gardening. Oh yeah, there were blue flowers all mixed in: for-get-me-not and borage, I had to pull a few out to bring some order there. The strawberry plants are vigorous. And the peony bush bloomed. All the little seeds and plants I tucked in when I was there in May are growing. So I pulled weeds and mulched with the mowed hayfield that is now lawn again. The deer leave the garden alone because of the borage, in theory. I guess it could be true. Here's a Thankful List. I haven't shown you one for a while. - Not thankful that Elv had a random AFib episode Saturday night. We are thankful for a quick recovery though the alarm on his watch went off seven times during the night Saturday. He said, " I had started to take my good health for granted, again. So I'm reminded."
- For Mom Graber's library. I discovered another book I hadn't read before. I realize again that she had whole sets of old books. Richmond, Curwood, Douglas, Wright, and Porter, to name a few. These yesteryear authors had a burden far beyond entertainment to share. And some of what they taught seems hardly relevant to me. Yet, humans haven't gotten any smarter or better really, so many of the truths they were teaching still matter.
- For household appliances that allow me to truly multitask on a busy Monday after a weekend away. I get great satisfaction out of starting the first load of laundry and my first cup of coffee at the same time.
- For Miracle Grow and long hoses with spray nozzles and hanging pots of ferns and flowers and landscaping projects.
- For grandkids with Daisy guns to rid this place of chipmunks bound and determined to live in these stone walls. Elv put bounty on mice, chipmunks, and squirrels. He stopped short of toads. I want the toads.
- For people who fix deer damage on cars.
- For worthy work and wise friends and ordinary days of summer.
