Hawaii Five-O logo in the main title
There are actually two versions of the pilot for Hawaii Five-O (1968-80). With some effort, you can view both versions.
Real life: The original pilot was shown as a TV movie on Sept. 20, 1968. (A few years later, it was rerun on The CBS Late Movie). Then, at the end of the show's first season, the pilot was re-edited into a two-part story of the series. This version would show up at times in syndication.
When Five-O became available on DVD, the TV movie was used. More recently, FreeVee, an Amazon streaming service with commercials, included the two-part version in its collection of first-season shows.
Differences: The TV movie version features a 90-second main title, meaning you have a longer version of the classic Morton Stevens theme.
The two-part TV episode has the standard main title except James MacArthur's title card is taken out because the actor isn't in the show.
After the main title, we see Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) arriving at work. The sequence includes a quick intro of Dan Williams (Tim O'Kelley, who was originally cast in the role). Danno informs the Big Kahuna that a friend of his, Hennessey, has been found dead. McGarrett races to his car to get to the beach where Hennessey's body was discovered.
In the two-part episode version, we only see McGarrett get to his car to check out the beach.
The TV movie version, when it's time for a commercial, simply fades to black. In the two-part episode version, when it's time for a commercial, we have the standard series trope of using the Hawaii Five-O logo with dramatic music.
The TV movie version listed all the major guest stars in the 90-second main title. In the two-part series version, guest stars are only listed in the episode in which they appear. Examples: Leslie Nielsen is listed in Part I. Lew Ayres as the governor, is only listed in Part II. James Gregory as Jonathan Kaye is only listed in Part II. Nancy Kwan, Andrew Duggan, and Khiegh Dhiegh as Wo Fat are listed in both parts.
The TV movie was simply titled Hawaii Five-O. The TV series version is titled Cocoon Part I and Part II.
