How can the sun be coming up
as the sun is going down
did it have to take so long for the dawn
that sunset-time is here, yet
not just one but many little dawns
bring light into dimming day
maybe the stumbling finally ending
as I lurch onto the way
Will the dawn expose sad ruins
or an edifice of grace
a monument to delusion
cave signs found undecipherable, or
a guidebook through the labyrinth
a last will devolving revelation
the diary of a watchwoman, or
black graven elevation
Does the dawn mean I am winning the prize
or just stumbling over the finish line
after everyone is gone home
no solace in solitude
does the sunset mean I missed my chance
your words "well done" I will not hear
all this running and stumbling for nothing, or
are your open arms with the sunset near
The sunrise and the sunset are yours
you have always walked beside
through lowering darkness toward ever brighter day
to grab this seeking hand and
I can know you have led me
through the everlasting ruins victorious
and from where this watchwoman sits and waits
the dawn and the sunset will be glorious
