Coloring outside the lines and doing something I wouldn't normally do had a big pay-off. The smile on my grandson's face when he hugged me and thanked me for coming to Sealy High School's first game of the season was golden. Sometime when the General pushes me to do something I don't want to do, it is in my own best interest. But how could she have known?
As a rule of thumb, I don't go more than 30 miles from home on Labor Day weekend. There are simply too many cars, folks in a rush and a subsequent parking-lot-kind of experience on the highway. Thanks, but no thanks! I wasn't born yesterday.
Truth be told, when the General orchestrated the plan that we would go to the game, she too, didn't realize that this is Labor Day weekend. Seriously, how did the timing of the beginning of school and the first school holiday of the season come so quickly?
Like I said, the smile on Jake's face when he saw that the General and I were at his first game was a feel-good experience. I wouldn't miss it for the world, but I almost did. Shame on me!
Did I mention there is always a method to the General's madness? Earlier, she invited Andrea and Kevin, our daughter and son-in-law, to go with us. For starters, even though we were going in my truck, she knew that Kevin would drive. I'm not saying there isn't power in prayer, but Kevin would prefer to be behind the wheel than on his knees making petitions for safety as a passenger. He will tell you that is the kind of stress he wanted to avoid.
As it turned out, the commute was a piece of cake – easy for me to say – I wasn't driving. The dead-to-rights parking lot was just past the Bergstrom International Airport between Austin and Bastrop. Nothing was moving faster than 20 miles an hour before intermittent screeching halts. Without having any idea what we were doing, Kevin made a right turn. In short order, he turned left. Apparently in frustration, they made that same turn one time before and it proved to be much faster. I only wish I could remember where we turned, because I may want to do that again.
Craig and Becky invited us to arrive at 1700 for Carnitas. In addition, their close friends John and Amanda Fleming from College Station were also coming. John and Craig were freshman at A & M many years ago. We also had an opportunity to visit with their son, Garrett, at the game.
We also had an opportunity to meet our foreign exchange student grandson from Germany. His name is Noah, and he is delightful. He loves school in Sealy, and he is pleased to be living with the Forrester clan and their four dogs. He doesn't have a dog back home in Germany, because his dad is not a dog person. I know the feeling. In addition, I learned that you can't get a driver's license to drive my yourself in Germany until you are eighteen. I guess when there is no speed limit, it pays to wait.
We heard our grandson's name as being in on the tackle many times last night. As a special treat, Jake is number 43. It is the same jersey that his older brother wore when he also played defensive end.
By the way, Big Willie's fan club that includes folks from Florida to California that tuned in to the Sealy Sport's Network showed up last night to listen to Jake's game as well. So now they are in is fan club.
All the Best!
Don
