I tell him to say sorry, and he deflates, hides behind a door. I ask him what's wrong, he says he's scared to say sorry, and it's such a little human moment, the beginning of Everything, and I know exactly what he means. He's saying something he's going to feel a million more times as his bones get bigger and his world gets bigger and his problems get more dire. It feels weird to be vulnerable, to be humble, to be wrong. My bff who I never actually met Rachel Held Evans wrote 'The annoying thing about being human is that to be fully engaged in the world, we must be vulnerable.' I tell Joe that saying sorry is actually very brave, that I say sorry all the time, so does Dad, so does everyone. He likes the feeling of being brave, being called brave. He creeps out from behind the door. Humbled and exposed, he delivers his apology to Bobbie who literally has no idea what we're talking about, to her, her tears were yesterday. They keep playing, 1.5 and nearly 4 years old respectively, but also 22 and 25, and 77, and 80. | | | |
