It's been almost 10 years since I began my journey to zero waste. I have loved new consumerism. I have always enjoyed new cleaning products and health and beauty products. Then, I moved to a rural area that didn't have recycling. The best beauty products one could find in my area were at Walmart or the Dollar Store. I decided to purchase glass spray bottles, and glass containers for cleaning products.
I had begun looking at a few things: my carbon footprint, Stella would eat anything with plastic, and an expensive trash bill. I was determined to remove all plastic from our lives. I started with cleaning products. I used to have a cleaning product closet. I ended up with making a glass cleaner, an all purpose cleaner, furniture polish, and a bathroom scrub. I added a steam cleaner, a steam mop, and reusable cleaning cloths.
I moved on to health and beauty items a few at a time. I love skin care products, but what I really love is the process of indulgent care. Moving across country and losing my day spa was not pleasant. I used to go weekly for different services.
We had a small garden before the pandemic and we tripled it during the pandemic
I started doing more canning. Now, before we purchase things, we look at the packaging, if it can be recycled, and if we need it.
