I met Feisan a few years ago when she joined a HomSkil's online homemaking course. She was already a good cook, so she was ahead of others who needed to learn the basics of cooking. What stood out to her in the course was that the bathroom/toilet/restroom is a "comfort room", a private space where one feels comforted. It inspired her to transform her restroom into a comfort room with plants, cosy floor mat and colourful elements to warm up the place.
Feisan and I kept in contact, and she has contributed to this blog with healthy recipes. We have yet to meet in person, as she lives in KL and I live in Singapore.
The recent post on Sabahan Delights meant a lot to Feisan. She wrote: "I grew up in KL, so I lost touch with my Sabahan roots. I still do go back to Sabah at least once a year, but I am more familiar with my mother's side of the family, they are more Chinese. Now that my parents are semi-retired, and are based in KK, we are re-learning our culture. My mom learnt to cook some traditional dishes, like the hinompuka. My parents are trying to cultivate our ancestral land for food, thank you for sharing our food through your blog! Below is kuih penjaram freshly baked by my mother (with the sunrise in the background)."
Sabahan breakfast
Some traditional dishes
Hinompuka and kinolobok (steamed cakes)
Sabah - a fruitful land
Pumpkins
Kota Belud
Tarap (creamier and milder than jackfruit)
Sabahans are among the Asians who like spicy food. I like to cook Thai dishes, but it's a bit discouraging when not many of my friends can take spicy food. Recently, my Sabahan students and I prepared a Thai buffet. They were a joy to cook for because they could take spicy food. There is nothing like freshly made chili paste, like the one Feisan's family makes (below).
I once made nasi lemak chili from scratch. I used a medium-size wok and it was full. The chili was consumed over dinner and there was no trace of it left after dinner. I have not made nasi lemak chili since then, perhaps it's time to look for a recipe and make some again.
Have a great week ahead.
