Barbara Broccoli, boss of Eon Productions
Barbara Broccoli, chief of Eon Productions, met with Qatari officials on Monday night in Venice, the Deadline: Hollywood website said.
The entertainment site suggested this was related to Bond 26 while adding it was part of an effort to secure financing from Qatar for a proposed Othello movie starring Daniel Craig. The Othello movie would be based on a 2016 play setting the Shakespeare story in modern times.
Here's the key excerpt:
James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli was one of the guests at a gala dinner hosted by the Doha Film Institute (DFI) and the Media City Qatar (MCQ) on the fringes of the Venice Film Festival on Monday evening.
The veteran producer's presence added fuel to recent reports that she is attempting to secure Qatari finance for ex-James Bond actor Daniel Craig's big screen passion project Othello, with well-placed sources hinting on Monday night that talks were ongoing.
Bond 26 is the sexy angle. But Othello is what needs to be resolved before Bond 26 can proceed.
The notion in the Deadline story (reading between the lines) is Broccoli is offering a quid pro quo -- fund Craig's passion project and perhaps Bond 26 might film in Qatar. While Craig is retired from playing Bond, the actor was Broccoli's favorite 007 actor. Eon had a long goodbye to celebrate Craig's run as Bond.
In the past 10 days or so, the British press has exhibited Bond 26 fever, with stories in The Telegraph and The Times seeking to explain the delay in Bond 26. The latter relied on quotes from Bond fans making predictions, including one that Bond 26 really (really!) has already hired a director and an announcement is coming in November.
If Deadline is to be believed, things may not be happening that quickly. But, hey, it's all good for clicks, right?
