Edward Berger, director of All Quiet on the Western Front, told the Deadline entertainment website that he won't be directing Bond 26.
Berger's name was floated as a Bond director in a late August story in The Telegraph and a Sept. 1 story in The Times.
"That's an absolute rumor," Berger told Deadline. "There's no truth to it whatsoever. I would be very grateful if you put out that fire."
Deadline's interviewer compared Berger to Sam Mendes, who helmed Skyfall and SPECTRE and added Berger would make a great 007 director.
"He's a great filmmaker," Berger responded. "But Barbara Broccoli is a wonderful producer. She will know what to do at the right time, and it's her family legacy. It's her job to protect this and whatever choice she's going to make is going to be the right choice for the legacy of that genre."
The Telegraph said Berger was "understood to be on Eon's radar." The Telegraph didn't specify who understood this. The Times story listed Berger as part of fan speculation of potential Bond 26 directors.
The Deadline story is a long interview with Berger about his career. The director's comments about Bond came at the very end of the story.
