Remember him?
The website World of Reel over the past year has been very active in writing about who might direct Bond 26. But the results have been mixed.
Sept. 14, 2023: The website posts a story saying that there's talk that Matthew Vaughn is the top choice to direct Bond 26. World of Reel cites Daniel Richtman, described as a Twitter influencer and writer on his X bio page, as the source of this.
Earlier, on July 20, 2023: the Giant Freakin Robot site published a story claiming that it has learned that Matthew Vaughn "has emerged as the top choice to helm the next James Bond movie."
Outcome: Vaughn says on the Happy Sad Confused podcast during the fall of 2023 that Eon Productions "are not keen on me."
Sept. 26, 2023: World of Reel has a story claiming Eon Productions and Amazon MGM have a deal "in principle" for Christopher Nolan to direct upcoming Bond films. "There are sticking points to be ironed out in terms of tone that might scuttle things though."
Outcome: In November 2023, Nolan tells the Associated Press, concerning whether he might direct Bond 26: "No, sadly, no. No truth to those rumors."
July 1, 2024: World of Wheel proclaims Edward Berger "might be in contention to direct the next James Bond movie, which is still a few years away. The earliest we'd be getting this 007 reboot is in 2027."
The notion that Berger is a contender to helm Bond 26 gets picked up in an August story in The Telegraph and a Sept. 1 story in The Times.
Outcome: Berger tells the Deadline entertainment website this week that he won't be directing Bond 26.
"That's an absolute rumor," Berger told Deadline. "There's no truth to it whatsoever. I would be very grateful if you put out that fire."
To be sure, World of Reel isn't the only outlet going down these blind alleys. But it is a name that keeps popping up.
