Strategically greeting kids with warm slices of bread with giant pats of butter melting in the middle before showing them today's chore list. Success! A giant cleaning list that the kids pitched in to without complaint--amazingly done by 1pm! Grocery order for pickup put in last night so I could swing in and out parking lot this morning in minutes. Super yummy squash soup that's far healthier than it tastes. Two-thirds of the way through getting all the kids' bedding washed and put back on. And now, husband returning from the butcher with seven birds for the freezer and the blessed quiet of a flock with far fewer adolescent males competitively crowing each morning to impress the ladies. Now I can crochet the rest of the day away without guilt! Butternut squash, acorn squash, white potatoes, carrots, onions cooked in chicken broth then pureed with sour cream. So good and creamy! Or, more likely, finish up the photo book I make each year to send to birth family of our adoptive girls so that they can stay somewhat connected even though they aren't allowed to have direct contact. It's a tough thing to put together. Trying to share a lot--but not too much. Is showing the vacation pictures interesting--or does it seem too braggy? Do the girls look happy in each picture--can someone misinterpret a squint in the sun for a frown? Have I inadvertently, though background images, revealed too much about where we live and frequently hang out? The third year of doing this I feel pretty good at it; fairly reconciled that there will always be lingering doubts. But it isn't easy. The day also went well. I created some of my "Best Lines" blog which will be coming very soon. I also watched a podcast today. Overall not very productive but fairly okay for weekend. I am just thinking what are the things that I can do to be more productive and will also help me to find new purpose in life and I am really thinking about writing. I don't know how much this thought is going to last but I definitely know that if not now then some day I am definitely going to write a book. I am also looking into starting some sort of E-commerce business as another side hustle. I am not sure what I should be selling or which sector I should target. There is actually tons of information and I am not able to figure it out. I am also looking for doing some social service kind of thing around theme of climate change. It just clicked in my mind when I was listening to "Bill Gates" speech on "Climate Change". Nothing is fixed now. But I know that I will be doing something around these 3 only. Actually I don't know, may be 4 or 5 will also get added. No learning today, just confuse about what else I can do. Have a Great Day This free site is ad-supported. AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I'm going to be catching up on the first two issues of Star Trek: Mirror War, along with the TPB of Mirror Broken. Then I'll be checking out the second volume of classic Life with Archie stories, which takes the Riverdale gang out of the high school drama realm and drops them into various other genres. Weekend Reading 85Δ: Gilliamesque TAIMUR DAR: During the pandemic I finally had time to sit down and watch the films Twleve Monkeys and Brazil from filmmaker Terry Gilliam. Little did I know that those two films pretty much perfectly captured my life for the past 18 months. This last week was fairly trying due to some IT computer issues for my office job, and I definitely felt like Sam Lowry and could help but listen to the Brazil soundtrack for an escape. This sudden Gilliam kick has me interested in checking out Gilliamesque: A Pre-posthumous Memoir for a deep dive into his life and art.   Weekend Reading 85Δ: Revenge of the Sith BILLY HENEHAN: Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings just dropped on Disney+, so I'll hopefully be sitting down to watch that tonight. While I wait for nighttime to roll around, I'm reading the Stars Wars: Revenge of the Sith novelization by Matthew Stover. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say this is one of the best pieces of Star Wars writing ever. There's an even a Twitter account dedicated to only tweeting out passages from the book, which reads like poetry in prose form. Weekend Reading 85Δ: Stepping Stones JOHANNA DRAPER CARLSON: Given my interest in Sherlock Holmes, I think it's finally time for me to catch up with the Viz Manga series Moriarty the Patriot, now up to five volumes. It's a rather unique take on the familiar characters, with several Moriarty brothers as anti-upper-class terrorists and a countrified Holmes. I also realized I somehow missed, when it came out over a year ago, reading Lucy Knisley's Stepping Stones. I'm looking forward to reading this autobio-inspired story of a girl coping with moving to a farm and a new step-family. But the work of flowers goes on year round. Every season has its special brand of planning, reaping, and sowing. I had never really even heard of dahlias until we dove in head first to flower farming. They were prissy. Expensive. Fussy. Temperamental. But oh, what beauties. One of my partners wanted dahlias, so off we went into the world of tubers. Why tubers? Some plants grow from bulbs, but dahlias emerge from tubers. We ordered them from several US growers. I'm a sucker for a good name, so I ordered some based on their clever names...Chick-a-dee for the 2 Chicks, for example. Others I ordered based on interesting photos or descriptions. And Cafe au Lait, the "Queen of Dahlias," seemed like a must-have. We put them in the ground according to the specific directions. Waited to water them. Watched and watched. The zinnias were already well on their way, for months even, when the dahlias first started to bloom. They were just as promised, unusual and exquisite. Colorful and intricate. They were worth the wait. Even the Queen lived up to her royal hype. Their fussiness doesn't end when they stop blooming. If you want to keep multiplying your plants, you can dig up the tubers and, with a little luck, they can be divided into multiple tubers which will each grow into a new plant the following year. I waited until after frost, cut them back, then held my breath as I tried to dig up the tubers. Tubers are delicate things so it was a bit of a process to find and lift them without breaking them. Voila! I was pretty giddy as I lifted the earth attached to each stem. Up came clump after clump after clump of tubers. From 22 plants last year to maybe 50 or 60 next year, plus new varieties we will add. It's so exciting! Each clump felt like a small victory. Keeping the tubers healthy is another stage of tricky. Right now they are air drying before we will move them to more permanent storage. Then we will wait a few months before we divide and plant again.
