Anime voice actress Krystal LaPorte announced on Twitter that her boyfriend and fellow voice actor, Chris Ayres, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2021. Ayres had been diagnosed with end-stage COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) in 2017, and received a lung transplant October 31, 2019.

Ayres is best known for providing the English voice for Frieza in the Dragon Ball Z franchise. He has also voiced characters in Gantz, Tamako Market, Phi-Brain - Puzzle of God, Gintama, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Sengoku Basara, Initial D, Tears to Tiara, and many other titles. Ayres also served as ADR director and scriptwriter for numerous English dubs.
