My Teen Mom Is Now My Best Friend

"Her whole life was a string of perfect, fall-in-line, type-A decisions. She was prom queen, best smile, most likely to succeed. And then, she got pregnant with me."

That's how Samm Burnham Davidson opens her latest piece, about her relationship with her mom, who got pregnant when she was 18. No doubt it was tough at times, but it turns out that they're super, super close as a result: "She is my first choice for any girls-night-out activity. She is fun, interesting, and full of energy. She wears Hokas, rides the Peloton, and loves reality TV. We speak the same sarcastic, short-versed language, have the same humor, and understand the same references." Read her on their ups and downs, and what she wants for her relationship with her own kids.

I Brought My Mom To My IUI. She Wanted Me To Bring A Vibrator.

I love this excerpt from Alyssa Shelasky's new essay collection, out today: This Might Be Too Personal: And Other Intimate Stories. It's about what happened when her mom came along to her IUI and decided to offer some unsolicited coaching: "My lack of a sex toy did not matter to my mother as she folded herself into the en suite medical closet, yelling at me to get off 'the old-fashioned way!' Now. We are a ride-or-die family, and my mom and I were born troublemakers, but her asking me to rub one out so that I could give her a second grandchild was too much, even for me."
