How Lockdown Drills Can Retraumatize Kids Who Have Experienced Domestic Violence

Today, Scary Mommy has partnered with The Trace, a nonprofit newsroom covering gun violence in America, for a package on gun violence. I think many of us worry about the potential impact of lockdown drills on our kids and whether they're the traumatizing modern-day equivalent of the old duck-and-cover nuclear drills.

But there's a group that they're especially hard on, and that's kids who have experienced domestic violence at home. As The Trace's Jennifer Mascia reports: "'It wasn't the fact that we were pretending there was an active shooter that really scared me,' said Jane, now 17, whose name has been changed to protect her privacy. 'It was being cramped in a dark, small space, and the quiet.' It was so silent, she said, that 'my classmates' whispering scared me.'"

Give it a read, and a lot of thought.

GUN VIOLENCE
My Ex Shot Me 5 Times In Front Of My Kids. Here's What I Want You To Know.

As part of our package in partnership with The Trace, we have a powerful first-person piece from La'Shea Cretain, a Moms Demand Action volunteer and Senior Survivor Fellow with the Everytown Survivor Network. She shares her own story: "I know that my story is one of far too many in a country where gun-related violence towards women continues to devastate lives. This can and does happen to anyone, at any time, at any age. Abusers with access to a gun are five times more likely to kill their female victims, and nearly one million women in the U.S. alive today have reported being shot or shot at by an intimate partner. I also know first hand that guns can be used as tools of fear and intimidation to terrorize, coerce or control people."
