Question
If God's heart has been broken
and God never changes
is God's heart broken
forever?
Was it always broken?
Is broken
the normal condition of
God's heart?
The Lord sighed sorrow
that he had ever
made humans
and put them on the earth
They (I) broke his heart
they (I) carved his heart
again in the wilderness
and again
How many times?
Yet
he engraved them
on the palms of his hands
like a lover's tattoo
Am I engraved too?
Did God's heart
ever heal?
Is he covered with scars
inside and out
passionate engravings?
They were appalled
his appearance
was so marred
Put your finger here
and see my hands
my feet
and put out
your hand
and place it in
my side
wounded forever
with
lover's tattoos?
… how I have been broken over their whoring heart that has departed from me and over their eyes that go whoring after their idols. Ezekiel 6:9 (ESV)
"What a marvelous word is this! — "I have been broken." Our sin can give God the heart-break, because He loves us so. Indeed, on the Cross the Lord died of a broken heart; of this the issuing stream of blood and water was the sign." -- Our Daily Homily by Frederick Brotherton Meyer, first published in 1898
"'Yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee,' says he, 'upon the palms of my hands.' There is no forgetting a thing that is written on the palms of your hands. You cannot do any work but you see it there; and God cannot do any work without seeing his children's names." -- Charles Spurgeon, Pleading Prayer
See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands ... Isaiah 49:16a
For I am the LORD, I do not change. Malachi 3:6 (NKJV)
