This evening Katie, Scott, and I got to watch the Sngs open their Christmas gifts from us.
We stateside folks had planned to send -- and/or have Amazon send -- our Christmas gifts to Hong Kong as per usual, but when their family scheduled a trip to Australia for Christmas, we had to delay sending our gifts till they got back home. Hence the "second Christmas" our 7:00 tonight (their 9:00 AM tomorrow).
When Ezekiel (4 1/2) and Ellie (3) jointly opened a shareable gift from Aunt Katie, Ezekiel immediately said with some disgust, "It's a heavy, boring book" and set it aside. I felt bad, we all smiled, and Jessica tried to interest them in it, explaining that it was a book she could read to them and they could learn about lots of plants and animals. It didn't have aardvarks, but on page 252 (it clearly was a heavy book!), it did have many different kinds of bears.
The unwrapping went on, and the immediate hit of the morning was a cannister of Color My Bath beads. The grands normally bathe in the evening, but when Jess explained that the "beads" would turn their bath water a color, Ellie said she wanted to take a bath now! Well, it being Christmas after all, that wish was granted, and soon those two were soaking in a tub of deep purple water. It was truly amazing.
All told, we were on the video call for over an hour, and about an hour after that, Jess sent us a picture of E & E snuggled on the couch with their daddy reading to them from a book that Ellie was holding in her lap and Ezekiel was looking at very intently. Jessica's caption for the picture was, with eyeroll smileys, "The boring book that they've been reading for the last 20 minutes, asking to see all kinds of different animals and wanting to read the facts. So 'boring'.''
I asked, "Would that be the 'heavy, boring book' from Aunt Katie?"
Jess replied, "Indeed." = )
