There are several terms used by church people that get misunderstood. Here are three that are very similar; Evangelize, testimony & witness. (To share beliefs, declare from the heart & proclaim the truth)
Evangelize:
To evangelize is to share religious beliefs, especially Christian ones, with other people.
Testimony:
a solemn declaration usually made orally by a witness under oath in response to question. Firsthand authentication of a fact.
Witness:
A witness is someone who provides testimonial evidence, either oral or written, of what they know or claim to know.
Our lives should be a living testimony, and bear witness to what we know and believe to be true of God in our life. We don't have to know scripture word for word. Just be able to speak of how God has worked or is working in our lives.
When we profess to be Christians other people watch us closely. Some will be watching hoping to see us fail, others want to see if we will deal with issues differently. But either way our actions reveal our true hearts.
How we handle the challenges and trials we face day by day speaks volumes to those who see us.
I am not going to say we will handle every issue perfectly, in fact we will probably mess up. But we don't let that stop us from trying to do the best we can. And not dwell in our failure.
We remember we are not perfect little Christians, we are just forgiven sinners. It is by Christ's mercy and grace that we continue to strive to be the best we can be.
Most of us can not quote a certain scripture from memory that will make others understand what Christ did for them personally. But we can tell them what He has done for us and how He is working in us. We can witness as to how we first came to believe and how that belief is strengthened daily.
I don't see evangelizing as a set program or procedure. I see it as a one on one telling of one's own walk with Christ. Not only the blessing we receive but also the trial face along the way.
