This easy was sparked over a discussion about the issues ongoign across the world. My husband and I are very different politically. He is very liberal and I am not.
It is very easy to judge other countries when Americans have grown up with freedoms most countries have never dreamed of. We can say and do things in United States that in countries we would be imprisioned for or worse. There are terrible things going on across the world. It is easy to put that nation's people into "tidy little boxes". It is not the people that we must hate or mistrust, it is their governments that are to mistrusted.
I am painfully aware that democracy is not free. I rememeber my father saying how he came home from Vietnam to a lot of ugly hatred. My father didn't hold any hatred or a grudge toward these protestors, he said, "I fought for freedom and a person's right to say their thoughts and beliefs." I remember thinking as a 12 year old, that is so lame.
This morning we were discussing all the recent news across the world. My husband is a ranter. He will go on and on. I reminded him that he has grown up in a country of democratic priviledge. In Russia, people are arrested for things we take for granted. I could go on and on about judging people in other countries who risk being poisoned for speaking out against the government. Change across the pond in a totalitarian government, sometimes it takes the skipping of many rocks to create minor ripple of change.
The crisis in Gaza is heartbreaking. The images on the nightly news is gut-wrenching. The attack on Israel on October 7th was a terrorist attack. The bills combining Israel, Ukraine, and the border and the holding of the representatives's to come to an agreement. These issues should be addressed in different bills because they are different issues. A former President should not be influencing any policy in America right now.
Needless to say our letters to the Editor are going to be interesting this week.
