Dear Snarky,
I'm having a terrible time dealing with the fact that my oldest daughter is expecting her first baby within the next month and has REFUSED to give up the baby's name.
She "claims" it's so her cuckoo mother in law can't chime in with her own suggestions for the name.
I birthed this young mom, and might I add it was a very traumatic birth of which I'm still dealing with the aftermath. Ask my pelvic floor therapist.
This is my first grandchild. I feel like I cannot even bond with this baby because of it being nameless. I feel like I'm pulling away from my daughter emotionally. Is this normal?
And what's with this new trend of the young parents not revealing the baby names? Hell they reveal everything else! I would love to know what your readers have to say about this.
Nameless Granny
Dear Nameless Granny,
You need to get a hold of yourself. Your reaction to not knowing the name of your upcoming grandchild is way off the charts. Holy hell, I didn't name my daughter until she was two days old.
Honestly, in no universe should you be this upset. I actually think your daughter was doing you an act of kindness blaming keeping the name a secret on the "cuckoo mother-in-law."
The main issue though is that you're making the birth of your grandchild all about you. You need to know the name. You're pulling away from your daughter emotionally. You can't bond with the baby that's in utero. Your traumatic birth. Your pelvic floor.
Enough.
Not one bit of this experience should be about you. It's about your daughter and her baby. The only way "you" should enter into this is by asking "What can I do for you?" "I'm so excited for you." "How can I be there for you?"
I fear that your current attitude about your daughter and the baby name seems more like a control issue than one of caring.
Perhaps you need to talk all this through with a therapist and get some help/guidelines in what you can do to ensure that you don't jeopardize your relationship with your daughter.
Because if you stay on this current "you" course I predict that there might be problems.
