Breakfast is often a piece of bread and a cup of coffee on the go for many people. It's no exception for my friend Mar, who is from Spain and who is on holiday in Malaysia. She commented at breakfast that we eat too much in Asia, judging from the variety of breakfast dishes. Since I am on holiday, I look forward to breakfast.
I love the Malaysian country towns and villages. When I was a teenager, I used to come to Malaysia for study weekends by the beach. We would have history classes in a hut with baboons swinging from tree to tree in the background, and English literature classes by a bonfire on the beach at night.
On one of the trips to the study camp, I was entrusted with the eggs for breakfast with strict instructions to guard them with my life. It was hard work to stop them from cracking as the Land Rover we travelled in had us bouncing up and down in our seats as we made our way through the grasslands. I really appreciated fried eggs on that trip!
Nasi lemak (featured photo) and porridge are my favourites. It's not surprising that foreign visitors find fried rice and noodles for breakfast quite unusual, but locals and Asian visitors love them. I noticed that some of my friends would pack leftover breakfast for lunch, especially if it's fried rice or noodles, which are also dishes for lunch.
Chinese pastries
Banana and cashew cake, ham, logans and melon
Egg , tomato and toast
Century egg porridge
Fried rice with ikan bilis
Fried noodles
Cinnamon roll with bacon, prunes, banana and dates
It's still possible to have ham and eggs for breakfast, so foreign visitors will not miss familiar breakfast items. I must say, the cinnamon rolls here are really good.
There is something therapeutic about starting the day with a good breakfast and fresh country air.
Have a great week ahead.
