What follows are
some of the greatest hits of Bond 26 coverage. This isn't a complete list. But given how it appears Eon is concentrating on an Othello movie with Daniel Craig, some of this makes for amusing reading in hindsight.
Jan. 26, 2022: Justin Kroll of Deadline: Hollywood posts a tweet that "one source with a couple clients in the mix told me something interesting recently of when a (Bond 26) decision may come down the pipeline, 'I think we here who it is after the Oscars.'" It didn't work out that way.
Kroll did add a caveat in a follow-up post: "Obviously taking this with a grain a salt as putting an ETA on these types of decisions never works out but interesting that some believe this won't be an all year wait."
No, it turns out to be a multi-year wait.
June 12, 2022: The Sun claims Idris Elba "is now being considered to be the next 007 after ranking highly in market research tests."
Nov. 27, 2022: The Sun weighs in with a story Saying Aaron Taylor-Johnson "is a surprise frontrunner" to become the 007th actor to play James Bond in the Eon film series.
Dec. 10, 2022: The Sun is back with another story about Aaron Taylor-Johnson. This time, the tabloid is saying the actor has filmed a gunbarrel sequence. The story quotes a "movie insider" as saying Taylor-Johnson is "a step closer to signing a deal" to play Bond. The Sun also says "filmmaker Eon Productions looks to reveal the franchise's new star in March."
Needless to say, that bit about a March announcement didn't happen.
Dec. 31, 2022: The Daily Mail enters the Next Bond sweepstakes with a story saying actor Lucien Laviscount has "caught the eye of James Bond boss Barbara Broccoli and is being lined up to become the new 007." The article adds this note: "It is also thought that Ms Broccoli and her team are keen to have an ethnic-minority star to play 007 so the franchise is reflective of modern society."
Jan. 10, 2023: The Giant Freakin Robot website, citing its "trusted and proven sources," says in a story that Aaron Taylor-Johnson "is close" to securing the Bond role.
April 1, 2023: The Mail on Sunday posts a story that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the first choice to direct and co-write Bond 26. (Co-write with who isn't specified.) Waller-Bridge is described as being in "early discussions" with Eon's Barbara Broccoli.
March 7, 2024: The Sun is at it again, proclaiming that Cillian Murphy, who turned 48 in May, is now a contender to get the James Bond role. As noted above, The Sun previously (and breathlessly) said Aaron Taylor-Johnson was the leading contender.
March 18, 2024: Never mind about Cillian Murphy. The Sun now claims Eon Productions has offered Aaron Taylor-Johnson the role after all. Moreover, the tabloid also claims a script is being written and Bond 26 may start production this year.
Of course, Aaron Taylor-Johnson hasn't been announced. There's no director. There's no script. And Bond 26 is not starting production this year. Get in line behind Othello, 007.
